What Type of Health Insurance is Available?

Posted: 10/11/2009
There are two basic choices then it comes to choosing health insurance. Health insurance policies can either be individual policies or group policies. Individual policies are the policies that you the individual buy for yourself to use, which unfortunately in many cases can tend to be more expensive than a group policy would be and cover less medical care options than a group policy would. Not the best news I guess. Group policies are purchased for several people or employees at any one given time, and are usually purchased by an employer. Group policies will tend to have more affordable premiums than individual policies will because there are more policies being purchased at one time. In many cases group policies have better coverage overall.

Now with that being said, it is true that almost all health insurance policies have a deductible, which is the minimum amount that you the insured individual had to pay before the insurance begins to pay. Some insurance policies may pay a portion of your expenses, sometimes paying all of your expenses after a predetermined amount has been reached. Other policies might pay all of the expenses after the deductible has been met. It can vary in many cases, so we always recommend asking a lot of questions when you are searching for new health insurance.

It is also important to note that many insurance policies require their insured customers to pay co-pays. Depending on the policy and the type of care being given, co-pays will range in size from a couple of dollars to several hundreds of dollars. Co-pays are small charges that you the insured person have to pay at the time of a hospital stay or doctor's visit.

Because many of the insurance company have such a huge customer data base, they now have the leverage needed when negotiating prices with medical professionals on your behalf, which in turn means discounts on medical care and reduced prices for certain procedures as well. These discounts can help your medical care become a lot more affordable than you would expect, even if you have a deducible you have to meet before your health insurance policy will pay some of your medical expenses.
