How Can I Drop My Health Insurance?
Posted: 11/18/2009
If you have ever tried to drop your health insurance provider, only to be told that you must wait until the next open enrollment, though it may seem unfair, it is actually very common. Many group health insurance plans will indeed make you wait until the open enrollment period before allowing you to drop your coverage. From the standpoint of an employer, it would be easier to make any administrative changes that will affect the company's payroll deductions for a certain period of the year, instead of all year long.
The only exception that may assist you would be if you were to experience a qualifying event such as job loss, a reduction of hours, birth of a child, or legal separation or divorce. Then, you are typically given 30 to 60 days to notify your insurance provider and file any necessary paperwork for your claim.
